Artist Statement

Jessica McGhee is a conceptual, surrealist landscape painter working in mixed media on reclaimed plywood—materials once discarded, now restored with care and intention. Each piece transforms what was overlooked into something held, inviting reflection on renewal, value, and our relationship to the earth.

Her work is rooted in the belief that art and nature are quiet guides in the process of becoming. Through them, we learn—by trying, by misstepping, by discovering what resonates and what does not. In this unfolding, insight emerges gently, shaped by experience rather than certainty.

McGhee’s landscapes move between the tangible and the unseen, holding space for both tension and harmony. They reflect the rhythms of growth and decay, connection and solitude, mirroring the inner terrain we each carry.

At its core, her practice is an offering: a space to pause, to notice, and to return inward. Through sustained attention to art and the natural world, a deeper awareness begins to take root—nurturing resilience, clarifying values, and supporting a more grounded, embodied way of being.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe art education is a space for self-exploration—rooted in process, guided by curiosity, and open to discovery. Through making, individuals encounter challenge and possibility, cultivating insight through both intention and unexpected outcomes. Art becomes a language of cause and effect, where each experience—whether resolved or uncertain—deepens understanding.

Working with materials invites reflection and choice, strengthening inner awareness and trust in one’s own voice. Over time, this practice nurtures inner wisdom, supporting the growth of self-efficacy and embodied confidence. There is no single right way—only a continual unfolding, where exploration becomes understanding, and understanding becomes growth.
